In the early game it can be fun to figure out how to optimize your purchases or react to your rolls. My biggest gripe with Monopoly is that for roughly the last 1/3 of the game you already know the winner. Heck, calling a person "black" was intended as an insult, and it's now generally speaking the preferred term, and in some ways perhaps even increasingly becoming the only acceptable one. For example, the name for the religious group "Methodists" was originally intended as an insult which was mocking the way they were very methodical about how they practiced their beliefs. There are any number of terms like this that are used out in the world. "America" part of the origin of the term, but it's no longer got much to do with what the term actually means.
I could be wrong, but I think this is one of those terms which may have originally been intended to be derogatory but has since become so widely used that it's lost that original meanings and now it's just a term which sort of means it's own thing apart from whatever it's original component words may have meant.įor example, there are plenty of "Ameritrash" games which are not American these days, but nobody thinks the name requires that they be. I’m not saying you personally can’t “have fun” playing Monopoly (and that’s all that really matters) but the game is almost uniformly bad from a modern board game perspective. But the fact of the matter is that when I have great alternative choices and I won’t spend my time on inferior selections. If Monopoly was the only board game in existence, then sure, I’d still play it. I’m not here stating that Carcassonne, a 20-year old modern board game, is the end-all, be-all game but it doesn’t run into these glaring problems that Monopoly has.

So, in the time you’re waiting for Monopoly to end after the winner is apparent, I can play 1-2 full games of Carcassonne. Because of this, you have more agency in your success (despite there still being randomness). For most turns there’s an interesting decision on where and how to place your tile. I firmly believe that if Monopoly was designed today, it would not get published. These are my three biggest gripes with Monopoly and the fact is, these are catastrophic issues game design that, for the most part, don’t exist in modern board games. What are you expecting them to do? Sit there and be thrilled as everyone plays without them?ģ) Somewhat related to point 1, it is usually transparent who will win 30-60 minutes before they actually do win. The first player knocked out might wait for over an hour for the game to actually finish. Because of this the game lacks much sense of agencyĢ) Player elimination is also an enormous problem in this game. There are modern games that give you more interesting decisions in 15 minutes. You can probably count the interesting decisions you personally make in a game on a single hand over the course of 2-3 hours. If you can buy a property the answer is almost always that you should. There are few really intriguing decisions anywhere in Monopoly. You are rolling dice to move around a board for a few hours. Let’s look at why I think this is:ġ) Probably the most glaring issue is that it’s way too long for what it does. However, I wouldn’t ever play it again, and not because I’m “burnt out” on it or something, but the game simply isn’t good.
